(b. 1970) was first introduced to art by way of album covers and book jackets of the late 1970's. "My mom used to drop me off at a local book and record store. She would go shopping or to the bank and I would begin scanning album covers starting at the letter A and go as far as I could until she came to get me. She always came back too soon." By age 10 he was enrolled in private art lessons. In high school he began cutting his teeth on reproducing album cover art on denim jackets. In his sophomore year with the help of Lakeland (NY) High School art teacher, greeting card artist Jay Palefsky, he was accepted to Syracuse University's Pre-College Visual Arts Program. "That was one of the greatest experiences of my life. Almost 20 years later lessons I learned there still have an impact on me." Mark began college at Alfred University, then transferred to New York's School of Visual Arts. There he studied under some of the greatest artists in the profession: Marshall Arisman, James McMullan, Jack Potter, Sam Martine and Peter Fiore, to name a few. After graduating, Mark began illustrating Broadway and off-Broadway playposters and national ad campaigns for a major record label. A short list of clients and publishers incudes: The Wall Street Journal, Good Housekeeping, Mode, Billboard, Jazz Is, Warner Brothers, Verve Music Group, Disney Studios and CBS-Letterman Show. His work has been exhibited at the prestigious Society of Illustrators Museum of American Illustration in New York, The United Nations and universities throughout the United States. He was a driving force behind the Society's Prevailing Human Spirit 9/11 benefit exhibition as well. Mark, for the most part, works in watercolor and colored pencil on Strathmore paper products. "I like watercolor because of its speed. I need an instantaneous reaction. If a piece takes too long to do, it becomes less spontaneous and I lose interest". Mark was born in Yonkers New York and is currently a freelance illustrator living in Manhattan. Aside from album cover commissions he is currently curating an exhibition of album cover art for the Society of Illustrators as well as writing a companion book for the show. |
